What does "+ CLEP Prep" Really Mean?

CLEP is a system created by the College Board that allows students to test out of subjects in order to earn college credit! This is all about saving on college tuition by being able to demonstrate proficiency with certain subject matter. In fact, there are many subjects that students can "CLEP out of".

Given the ever-soaring cost of college education, we recognize that, at higher levels of math, many students and parents are making "business decisions" about what to do in the coming years. Our program has been designed to teach students math well, while simultaneously getting them ready to succeed on the CLEP test. We believe that these are not mutually exclusive goals, but complementary goals! Check out the FAQs below for more information.

CLEP FAQs

  1. Question: Is the "CLEP Prep" aspect of your course going to cost me more?
Answer: No. The cost of our course is all-inclusive. Any CLEP-specific materials or experiences we provide are included in the cost. The cost of actually taking the CLEP test is separate though, as that is paid directly to the College Board.

  2. Question: So, what's involved with taking the CLEP test?
Answer: As of the posting of this information, the cost of the CLEP test is $93.00. It can be taken locally (typically at most colleges/universities) and is offered year-round! There is no scheduling stress around, "We have to be ready by May 3!!!"

  3. Question: Do all colleges accept CLEP results?
Answer: Not necessarily. Many do, but some don't. There can even be variation within a college. For instance, the chemistry department might require to student to take the college's math courses, but "CLEPing out" would be acceptable with the education department. The College Board has a page dedicated to this topic.

  4. Question: Is CLEP better or worse than an AP course?
Answer: AP and CLEP are quite similar. AP is more onerous to work with in that a student has to 1.) Take an AP approved course, and 2.) Pass an AP exam in order to get the credit. CLEP is more accessible and versatile in that it allows anyone the ability to directly test out of a course. AP credits are usually accepted at more colleges, but even that is not a guarantee. In fact, there is an increasing trend around more and more colleges not accepting AP credits. The best course of action is to contact the college(s) your student has interest in and ask what their policy is.

  5. Question: Will you guys help with all the "CLEP stuff"? Like, will you sign me up for the test when it's time to do it, and stuff like that?
Answer: Yes and no! We have curated various resources to help families with how to sign up for the test, when to do so, what to expect, etc. However, we do not formally register students or see the results. That sort of thing is done locally.

  6. Question: What about practice tests?
Answer: Our program weaves in a few formal practice test opportunities throughout the course. These are meant to expose students to how the actual test will be, and thus prepare them so they're not coming in cold on test day.

  7. Question: I'm worried about programs that just "teach to the test" and don't care about student learning... it can become all about the test. Can you speak to that?
Answer: This is a great question! We don't teach to the test, we teach math. 😀 When we first discussed offering "CLEP Prep", this was discussed internally. Quality education is more important than doing a single test. We believe that, and hopefully you do too!
